DESCRIPTION

The Fiat 500e Drive Unit incorporates an electrically operated E-Park parking pawl system. When the driver selects PARK, an electric servo motor activates the parking mechanism within the Drive Unit, mechanically locking the transmission to prevent unintended vehicle movement.

Over time, the E-Park servo motor can wear or deteriorate, resulting in reduced motor performance or complete motor failure. When the actuator is unable to correctly operate the parking mechanism, the parking pawl may fail to engage.

SYMPTOMS

A failing E-Park parking pawl motor may result in:

  • “Service PRND” warning displayed on the instrument cluster

  • Vehicle will not properly engage PARK

  • Vehicle may be unable to shift into or out of the required operating state

  • Vehicle may become inoperable

  • In some cases, the ignition key may remain locked in the ignition

TYPICAL DIAGNOSTIC CODE

P1626 — Parking Pawl Motor Stuck

The presence of P1626, particularly when accompanied by a “Service PRND” message, may indicate a problem with the E-Park parking pawl motor or its associated mechanism.

SERVICE INFORMATION

Before replacing the complete Drive Unit, the E-Park parking pawl motor and associated mechanism should be inspected for:

  • Motor wear or failure

  • Binding of the parking pawl mechanism

  • Excessive resistance in the actuator mechanism

  • Electrical connector or wiring issues

  • Proper actuator operation and position

A failed E-Park motor may be serviceable without replacing the complete Drive Unit, depending on the condition of the parking mechanism and actuator components.

IMPORTANT

A vehicle experiencing an E-Park failure should not be operated until the parking system has been properly diagnosed and repaired. Failure of the parking mechanism can result in the vehicle being unable to secure itself in PARK.
